It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! From the twinkling lights on the tree to the excited faces of little ones trying to stay awake to hear the sound of sleigh bells, children definitely add to the magic of Christmas. In the spirit of the season, here are five holiday activities for kids to do over the holidays.
1) Salt Dough Decorations
These simple Christmas tree decorations are super fun and so easy to make! The best thing about making these is that they’re great for all ages and it’s something you can keep and treasure for years to come. All you need is salt dough, Christmas cutters and paint, glitter, etc. to decorate the decorations once they’re dry.
Here is a link to the ‘Rainy Day Mum’ blog post on how to make salt dough.
2) Christmas scavenger hunt!
This is great fun to create and can give hours of entertainment! There are also many templates available online, just search ‘Christmas scavenger hunt’ for plenty of inspiration.
Begin by taking photos of Christmas items you want to include in the scavenger hunt (your Christmas tree, a Christmas sock, a reindeer toy, mince pie, holly, etc.), then print the images off and put them into little envelopes. Decide which order you want the scavengers visiting each object, keeping hold of the first picture clue, and hiding the rest in succession (e.g. hide the second clue with the first object, the third clue with the second object, etc.).
Start by handing over the first picture clue, which will lead them to the first object, for instance, the Christmas tree. There, you will have hidden the picture clue for the next object (for instance, the holly), and so on. Lead the children all round the house with a fun surprise, like chocolate coins or a small Christmas toy for them to enjoy at the end!
3) Ice skating
Ice skating is a fun outdoor activity for kids, it’s festive and a great form of exercise. It is also an activity, if loved, you can participate in again all year round. You never know, the next hockey star or Torvill and Dean may be living under your roof!
Active Camps at Holme Grange will feature an ice skating off-site trip this December! Check the website for more information and to add this to your booking.
4) Christmas Baking
Gingerbread men always a firm favourite and they’re so easy to make. Here is a link to the BBC recipe for how to make gingerbread.
Once baked and cooled, it’s time to decorate! Use a simple icing, and sweets such as jelly beans, M&Ms or Smarties, jelly dots, and sprinkles. They can then either be given as gifts or enjoyed as a tasty treat at home.
5) Active Camps!
Working in the week leading up to Christmas? Have some last minute Christmas shopping to do? Worried about what to do with the kids?
